Excerpt

With my arms laden with emporium bags, I walk through the middling crowd of Friday shoppers when, all of a sudden, a strange, creeping sensation runs up my spine, and in an instant I remember the shadow lurking in the trees of my garden earlier. It’s the same feeling I’d had then – when I was sure I was being watched. Suddenly, I panic. I can feel eyes boring into my back. I walk briskly through the crowd to mingle in, and then turn sharply to look over my shoulder. The shadow darts behind a pillar. Are they following me? What should I do? I hear my thudding heartbeat as I walk towards the car park, footsteps pounding on the tarmac behind me – but I don’t dare look. I freeze on the spot. The pounding stops and I take a deep breath as I turn around. There’s no one there. Was someone actually following me? As I walk towards my car I try to clear my mind, try to think more clearly. It was probably no one. Not everything has to be sinister, I remind myself. Maybe it was just my overactive imagination.
