…Suddenly, everything around us eruptedinto pandemonium. First, the air around us turned to a gusting wind, blowing myhair into my face. Next, the candles were blown out, leaving us in pitchblackness. The wind then stopped just as suddenly as it had started, and aneerie cold ﬁlled the air. I looked down in disbelief as my breath revealed afrosty cloud. Cassie screamed and the sound was horriﬁc; her voice was high andshrill, penetrating my ears. It sounded like something was ﬂung into the treesas branches snapped and leaves rustled. Then I heard something crash to theground in a loud, disturbing thud. I heard Cassie’s voice again as she yelledout, “Chris!” A vicious sound of ripping ﬂesh ﬁlled the air.
I scrambled to relight the candle and thenI heard a moan from behind me. “Cassie? Izzy?” I couldn’t see anyone, it wasstill pitch black. Giving up on the candle, I closed my eyes and started torecite the Lord’s Prayer, but the words had vanished from my mind. I couldn’tremember a single word. The feel of icy ﬁngers gripped my shoulders, ﬁrmlysuspending any attempt on my part to move. “Oh God save me,” I whimpered.
A sinister laugh crept into my ears, “Youcan’t be saved from yourself. You should know better, Ember.” A thick airsurrounded me like a bubble encasing me. I tried to get up and run, but my bodyseemed heavy and restricted, my movements slow as if I were stuck in gelatin. And then, just like that, everything was back to normal. The candles were all in their rightful spots with their wicks burning brightly. Everyone was there, holding hands in the circle and staring at me. Mouths wide open…
